Employers And LMIA Programs
If an employer wishes to hire a temporary foreign worker, a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) will be required in most cases. A positive LMIA will show that there is a need for a foreign worker because there are no Canadian workers or permanent residents available to fill the job.
Employers wishing to hire a foreign worker must provide the foreign candidate a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) in order for them to apply for a work visa to legally work in Canada. This document is issued by Employment and Social Development Canada to employers who have applied and met all the requirements. Employment and Social Development Canada’s mandate is to protect the Canadian labour force by ensuring that no Canadian citizens/permanent residents are available to do the job. Therefore, a LMIA is required to prove that the foreign worker is required to do the job.
